• Pairs of Celadon vase - Versailles & Breteuil

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit the marvellous chateaux de Versailles and de Breteuil over the same week end in the near Paris area.

There, I discovered two wonderful pairs of ancient celadon vases.

The first one has been bought by King Louis XVI in 1782 from the collection of Duc d'Aumont. They had probably been mounted with golden bronze montures around 1720/1730.

They are spectacular as they are both 78 cm high; i.e. much higher than other existing pairs from the same period.

You can see them directly in the King's apartment near the Galerie des Glaces!

The second pair of celadon vase from the same period is to be seen in the family owned Breteuil castle. The pair is much smaller but also brighter and with very nice incised drawings.

This pair has probably not really been noticed by celadon lovers as they are hidden among so many old pieces of furniture. A wonderful discovery!
